I think managing up is difficult to do. We don't like to brag about ourselves. Even talking up a coworker is difficult.

Spotlighting our performers would be good. It seems that everyone is treated the same - excellent performers and very poor performers, so you wonder if your efforts are recognized.

I'm interested in the idea of recognizing consistent behavior. I hadn't considered doing that - it seems like rewarding staff for doing their job. Yet, it's another way to acknowledge that staff is doing what they're supposed to. I certainly have enough staff that don't - it would be good to recognize those who do.

I don't think managing up a co-worker is hard at all; it just takes a little practice. For instance, managing up during shift change can be relatively easy if you do beside report (which I highly advocate. "Mrs. X, Jennifer will be your nurse from 3pm to 11pm. Jennifer has lots of experience in the ICU and has a terrific personality. She can always make me smile. She can definitely manage your care and provide you with an excellent, pain-free shift." It can be as easy as that.
